Business Case: E-Commerce Company Weltbild Goes Hyperscaler

What started with a maintenance and support assignment in the area of Hadoop led to a partnership and close cooperation with Weltbild GmbH & Co KG, one of the largest e-commerce retailers in the DACH region.

In addition, the vendor support for the existing system expired and the company decided on the future project "Data migration to a new, modern cloud infrastructure": Several terabytes of relational data distributed on different servers were to be migrated into a new era - from on-premise Hadoop to the cloud. Our specialists accompanied the company along the way.

Today, also thanks to the competent support of KYBEIDOS, our customer is able to operate the system in the cloud itself. Data processing now runs on one of the most modern hyperscale platforms - scalable, flexible and "new school".

A good choice!

Initially, the day-to-day operation of the existing Hadoop data processing and analysis platform had to be maintained. With our Hadoop expertise, we were ideally suited for this job: In proven collaboration with IT colleagues at the customer, we further developed and maintained the existing programs such as Java, Spark and Hive-SQL. Workflows and processes were redefined and we were also always on hand to help with troubleshooting.

The second step focused on migrating the data to a new cloud system. A platform was sought that met all the customer's requirements. To do this, we created a proof of concept and evaluated the services, benefits and costs of various cloud providers. After deciding on a suitable system, the migration preparation and finally the step-by-step implementation started. Today, a tutorial we developed enables the customer to continue the migration and operate the system himself. Our tutorial is also used for onboardings. In addition to the know-how transfer, our customer also appreciates the fact that we are partners of the major cloud providers. This means we can always organize technical support or training measures quickly.

It is important to us to keep all those involved up to date and to coordinate their activities via short channels. Regular jour fixes and reports were established for this purpose. We also involved the service provider that manages the network on a selective basis to ensure that access to all components continues to function without restriction.

The advantages of now being "cloud-ready and new school" are obvious: In addition to the increased attractiveness for new, qualified employees, the e-commerce retail company now has a supportable, powerful and scalable environment in the cloud - with access regulations and a rights structure. The data, which is centrally located in one place, can be easily used by external systems. This enables the customer to develop further use cases or new business models.
